Make marks and image credits

108 marques appear on this site, and every one has a mark — no page depends on an image request to somebody else's server, and no page shows a broken image. 65 are free-licensed files from Wikimedia Commons, 34 come from the car-logos dataset, and 9 are placeholders we generated ourselves because no suitable file exists.

Marque names and marks are trademarks

Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota and the rest are trademarks of those companies. Their marks appear here to identify the vehicles the data is about — the same way a garage sign names the cars it services — and not to suggest any endorsement, sponsorship or partnership. If you own one of these marks and want a particular file changed or removed, tell us and we will replace it with a placeholder.

Wikimedia Commons files

These carry an attribution obligation, so each row names the author, the licence and the file page. Where the licence is public domain because the mark is below the threshold of originality (plain type, simple geometry), the author field is the uploader who made the file.

Car-logos dataset files

34 marks come from the car-logos dataset, which collects survival-era and current marque artwork — mostly for defunct British marques and newer Chinese brands that Commons does not hold a usable file for. These are the marques' trademarks; the dataset asserts no licence over them, and we use them for identification only.

Generated placeholders

Where neither source had a file we could publish, the mark is a two-letter tile we drew ourselves — neutral ink on the page surface, so it reads as a chip rather than as a logo that failed to load. A coloured square is honest; another company's wordmark is not.

Editorial images

One image on this site is not a mark: the panel art on the homepage. It is a studio-style render of a car, produced for that panel, so it carries no third-party rights and no attribution obligation. It is listed here because "we made it" is still a source, and because a reader who finds a file on a page should be able to find out where it came from.

The panel carries no lettering of its own. An earlier version of this file had the wordmark, the label and the headline drawn into the pixels, with the same words rendered live on top of them — so the image was a picture of a headline rather than a picture, and anyone who saved it got type they could not change. The words you see on that panel are text on the page.

How the marks are sized

A logo file is mostly empty space and its aspect ratio says nothing about how big it should look: Volkswagen's roundel is square, Ford's oval is 3:1, Mini's wordmark is 14:1. Each file's ink box is measured — the bounding box of the pixels that are actually there — and the mark is fitted by that box into a tile sized from it. That is why a wordmark and a roundel carry the same visual weight at the same pixel height, which plain object-fit cannot do.
